Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails

Big Sky is known for its abundance of outdoor parks and trails that welcome canine companions. From the expansive in-town paths to hiking trails along the rolling meadows of Ousel Falls Park, dogs, and their owners can explore the great outdoors together throughout most of Big Sky. Whether you want a casual walk or an all-day adventure, there are loads of paw-some fun in Big Sky.

  • Big Sky has few leash mandates or pet restrictions, but we encourage guests to use a leash if their pet is not consistent with voice commands.
  • Keep your pets out of harm's way and safe by being aware of hazards such as wildlife, deadfalls, rocks, river crossings, other pets, and hunters (seasonal).
  • Obey all posted pet rules, particularly at trailheads.
  • Pick up after your pet.
  • Yeild to horses at all times.
  • Remember to share and respect Big Sky's open spaces, not everyone loves pets as much as we do and we want to keep Big Sky pet-friendly forever!
  • Be sure to pack necessary pet supplies for your hike - water, collar, leash, poop bags, first aid kit, treats/food.

If you are interested in a simple pet-friendly hike in Big Sky, try the South Fork Loop. This trail is a 1-mile round trip loop that is timbered and allows for a quick jaunt for you and your dog! The South Fork Loop is next to the Gallatin River which makes it a tad cooler, especially in the summer! For a lengthier hike, continue on the same road, it leads to other hiking paths such as Hummocks and Uplands Trails.

Lava Lake Trail is a 6-mile round-trip trail. It stands out as one of the more popular trails in the area and is very pet-friendly. The trail leads you through both forest and meadow at a gradual increase of 1,600 feet where it finally peaks at the picturesque Lava Lake. You and your pup can enjoy swimming or fishing in the quiet waters that are surrounded by countless pines.

Do you and your dog want to break a sweat? Make your way to the Cinnamon Mountain Trail located 10.5 miles south of Big Sky. An 8.5-mile round trip with a 2,600-foot elevation increase, this trail will give you and your pup a great workout alongside the beautiful landscapes of Big Sky. Make sure to bring an adequate supply of water and some bear spray as well.

Dogs are welcome at the seven outdoor tables at this Big Sky pizzeria. Ousel & Spur Pizza serves hand-tossed pizzas, Italian pasta dishes, appetizers, desserts, coffee drinks, and cocktails. Menu items include macaroni and cheese with pork belly, Margherita pizza, and the Montanan pizza made with elk sausage, pickled red onions, mushrooms, potato, sage, rosemary, and mozzarella. Ousel & Spur Pizza is open daily from 5 pm-close (9 p.m.).

McGill’s Restaurant & Saloon at the 320 Guest Ranch, is a casual American-style eatery that serves up a variety of delicious dishes. Your pet is welcome to join you at one of their pet-friendly outdoor tables, though they must be leashed. Start off with some tasty 320's game and wild mushrooms, then a 12 oz Bison New York Strip. McGill’s Restaurant & Saloon at the 320 Guest Ranch operates on seasonal hours, so be sure to call ahead!
